SUB Members Graduate From Social Justice Academy

Four members of the SUB Executive Committee graduated from the prestigious NYSUT Social Justice Academy in Albany, NY.

The Academy, designed to train NYSUT members in Social Justice issues and prepare them to produce social justice activities for their locals, was conducted in March and August and ended with a graduation ceremony on Aug. 7.

Attending the training were Vice President Chris Salamone, Treasurer Ambrosine Lythcott, and Delegates LaGuardia Billingslea and Sherrill Cooper. All four women volunteered their time to attend the Academy.

During the training, the team worked together to prepare a plan to bring social justice topics to its members, did community service work in the area, and bonded through some fun activities.

The SUB team plans to use the training to provide professional development for substitute teachers in the spring on Implicit Bias. The workshop, developed by NYSUT, touches on issues of racism, discrimination and bias. 

Members will be able to attend the workshop free of charge. Breakfast will be served and attendees will receive T-shirts or other items for their participation. In addition, the SUB intends to seek extra pay in our next negotiations for professional development hours.
