Thousands of books were distributed June 14-15 by members of the SUB Executive Council during the Juneteenth Festival in Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
The books, donated by Project Flight, were free to the public and included everything from coloring books, to novels and biographies geared toward young adults and adults. All the books were new and there was no limit to how many you could take. Some walked away with one book, while others took a bag full.
Executive Council members met with some of the dignitaries along the Juneteenth’s infamous 4-hour parade, include mayoral candidates Sean Ryan and Interim Mayor Chris Scanlon, who graciously posed for pictures.
While SUB does not endorse candidates, we urge all our members to vote for the candidates endorsed by NYSUT. The NYSUT Political Action Committee (PAC), interviews each of the candidates who requests endorsement and recommends those candidates who indicate they will support legislation that is beneficial to education, educators, students and public education.
Members of the Executive Council who volunteered at the Juneteenth Festival were: President Bob Jenkins,
Vice President Chris Salamone, Secretary Sherrill Cooper and Delegates Elaine Barthel, LaGuardia Billingslea, Brendalynn Jackson, Marisa Robinson, and Simpson Turley. Several friends of the Executive Council also volunteered.
