I want to update you today, as much as I can, about our new contract and to remind you of our upcoming holiday celebration on January 9.
I have gotten many phone calls regarding our pay hike and other items obtained in our contract and I want to address them here and urge you to please have patience.
Our pay hike is effective July 1. The Sub Desk last week said they hoped our new pay rates would be reflected in our next pay check, but if they aren’t, don’t be surprised, be patient!
Here’s the process: There are 900 subs working in Buffalo, all entitled to the raise. The Sub Desk has three employees, who along with their daily duties, have to investigate and determine which of those subs worked since July 1. They then have to calculate the retroactive pay for each person, based on their position on the pay scale, send that to Payroll and ask for a retro-active check to be sent to the sub.
Then, Sub Desk has to notify Payroll to increase each sub’s pay to the appropriate pay rate, and don’t forget, there are eight different pay scales based on years of service and whether you are certified or not. So, in reality, they are doing 1800 calculations! So, you will get paid, but it will take time.
Another question has been about getting a copy of the contract and the addition of a mailbox or Board to post SUB information. Again, it’s a process: The District and union have to update the constitution with the newly obtained items. Then each has to check and make sure the updates were added correctly. Then the Contract has to be printed. Until that happens, nobody but us even knows these items were added. The contract is then sent to the principals and they are directed to find us a space. Until then, feel free to post, this message and any SUB information on the BTF board in every school, until we get a place, and always check our website for information.
The new snow day pay is in effect and if you are scheduled to work 5 days prior to a snow day, you will be paid in the next pay period following the snow day. Also, the Unpaid Leave reduction from 25 days to 15 for disciplinary action, has already been enforced for two of our members.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me. Below is a flyer for our upcoming holiday party. I hope to see you there! Happy Holidays to you and your family!
In Solidarity,
Chris Salamone, vice president
on behalf of the SUB Executive Committee
