Dear Members,
After further discussions between the District and President Shirley Sapp-Burgess, the District has agreed to pay all Building Based Subs and “Subs to Cert” substitute teachers for full days for all days worked last week. This applies ONLY to Building Based subs and “Subs to Cert” substitute teachers. For Per Diem substitute teachers, even if you had signed up for full days last week you will only be paid for the half days that you worked. You will be credited with full days for all days worked last week towards your second semester 50 days bonus incentive.
We want to point out, as some people have asked, that paying you only for half days worked, as per diem substitutes, is NOT in violation of either the contract OR of past practice. Therefore, there is no basis for the union to file a grievance over the District’s decision on this. We know people feel this is not right, and we agree with you, but we all need to realize that what is right and what is contractually correct are not necessarily the same thing. We have tried numerous times in past negotiations to get pay for all per diem substitutes for days the District closed due to weather (snow days). We will continue to fight to get this in our contract and will include closures for all weather-related reasons, including hot days, storms, snow, etc. in our proposals.
