| TO: NYSUT Board of Directors NYSUT Local PresidentsFROM: Melinda Person, NYSUT President DATE: December 19, 2023 SUBJECT: Workforce Development Institute (WDI) Child Care Scholarship Program |
| I’m excited to share important news about a new program that many of our members may benefit from to offset the high cost of child care. Earlier this year, thanks to NYSUT’s advocacy, Governor Hochul announced an investment in child care services through a special grant program administered by the Workforce Development Institute (WDI). WDI launched the Child Care Scholarship Program to help working families with the high cost of child care. Under WDI’s program, applicants may qualify for $1000 monthly scholarship per child for full-time child care and $500 for part-time care, paid directly to child care providers. Scholarships are open to any resident of New York State outside of NYC who is working 10 hours or more or is in an education or training program, and whose income falls within the program’s income requirements [LEARN MORE HERE]. There may also be limited capacity and funding depending on your county of residence – applicants may be placed on a waitlist pending openings by region. You can learn more about the WDI Child Care Scholarship Program, and see if your family qualifies, by visiting www.WDINY.org/CHILDCARE. Already, thousands of families in New York have benefited from this program, many of them NYSUT members. This program is a direct result of NYSUT’s advocacy for our members in Albany. I hope you or your members will benefit from it. In solidarity, Melinda |
